AT&T's small-cell plans include 4G, Wi-Fi coverage

AT&T dished out more details about its small-cell plans Thursday, telling an investor conference that it wants to provide 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi access in deploying at least 40,000 of the base stations by the end of 2015. "The early small cells that we're deploying today are single-technology ... our plan is to go to units that can support UMTS [3G], LTE and Wi-Fi," said Bill Smith, the head of AT&T's network operations, who added that initial coverage would be mainly indoors. The Long-Term Evolution technology would augment the 3G HSPA+-based "metrocells" that AT&T is installing across the U.S.
