Pa. district seeks to balance meal charges with costs

Brian Rathgeb, director of foodservices for the Hempfield, Pa., district recently told members of the school board that the amount being charged for breakfast and lunch does not cover preparation costs. As a result, officials are expected to increase meal prices, which currently are $2.20 for elementary-school lunch and between $2.35 and $3.35 for secondary-school lunch. However, on average, it costs about $2.85 to provide each meal.
