Sandy victims face higher costs for flood insurance, rebuilding

Many homeowners in New York and New Jersey who were affected by Hurricane Sandy face stricter standards for rebuilding as well as increased flood insurance premiums under a law aimed at shoring up the National Flood Insurance Program. Flood insurance maps are outdated and "have become unreliable," said J. Robert Hunter of the Consumer Federation of America. "It's not doing you a favor to give a cheap rate, and a year later, your house is gone."
