Mo. early intervention efforts seek to avoid retention

Missouri educators are required by state law to hold back students if they do not meet grade-level standards in reading and others areas, prompting officials to focus on early interventions and make retention a last resort. Every year, educators in the Springfield school district identify students who are falling behind -- both in elementary and middle school -- for extra assistance.
