U.S. manufacturing steps up to energy challenge

U.S. manufacturing gross output fell 3% from 2002 to 2010, but energy usage declined far more -- 17% -- as a collective drive for energy efficiency ramped up. One example showcased by the Department of Energy in its ongoing Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge is Nissan's new paint plant in Smyrna, Tenn., which the company bills as its most advanced and energy-conscious globally.
