WHO initiates widespread polio eradication program

The World Health Organization is starting a campaign to eradicate polio in all 194 member countries. The disease has persisted in places such as Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and workers have been killed in some areas where people refuse to be vaccinated for political or religious reasons. WHO hopes the new plan will eradicate the wild virus by 2015 and control cases of the disease that develop from the vaccine.
