FTC chairman: Industry gets first crack at targeting regs

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Liebowitz outlined a laissez-faire outlook on behavioral targeting, indicating he hopes industry, working with the Better Business Bureau, can do the job of making sure consumer choice is preserved. "So long as self-regulation is making forward progress, the FTC is not interested in regulating in this area," Liebowitz said. He described targeted ads as a win-win for consumers, advertisers and the Internet economy, so long as consumer protections are in place.
