It remains to be seen whether consolidation of local broadcast stations into "mega-groups" really happens and whether it turns out to be a positive for the industry, columnist Harry A. Jessell writes. The sale of Allbritton's seven outlets, including highly-rated WJLA in Washington, D.C., will offer a sign of where the industry is headed, Jessell writes. "This offering will smoke out the real broadcasters, those who are not just playing out the string or looking to sell, but who believe in the upside of broadcasting and want to be a part of it," he writes.
