Competition seeks to ignite student interest in math

Students from more than 40 schools in Monterey County, Calif., recently competed in the county's annual Mathletics Competition. Students crunched numbers in hopes of winning scholarship money, gift cards and medals. "There's a high level of apathy, particularly in middle school, but kids like these really get that spark of interest, and it's going to take them great places in life," teacher Jeffrey Flathers said.
