CN: Rail could be next in line to use natural gas

Railroads could be the next in line to use natural gas for locomotive fuel to minimize carbon emissions and improve operational efficiency, according to Canadian National. The Class I considers a 100% conversion of locomotives to be a major task and is conducting extensive tests on a route with challenging terrain and that normally carries high-tonnage trains. "We're still in the test phase here," said CN spokesman Mark Hallman. "There are a lot of logistical challenges."
