Colo. honors shelter animals with new law

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has signed legislation declaring shelter dogs and cats to be the official state pet of Colorado, giving animals in need of homes a place of prominence alongside the state animal, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. Schoolchildren sparked the effort, and supporters say it was a good way to teach children about the legislative process. Hickenlooper noted the designation demonstrates the importance of pets.
