Radio stations are asked to pitch in for FM chip deal

Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan, as part of the three-year agreement for Sprint to produce FM-enabled smartphones, is in the midst of a drive to bring in $45 million for the cellular giant. Radio operators are being solicited for $10,000 per station per year, or the equivalent of five minutes of ad inventory a week, to benefit Sprint. Most participants are offering unsold ad time instead of writing a check.
