FBI investigates IRS targeting of conservative groups

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said he directed the FBI to begin a criminal investigation of the Internal Revenue Service's practice of singling out conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they apply for tax-exempt status. The move came just hours before an inspector general's report said the IRS evaluation of requests for tax exemptions suffered from poor management and inadequate supervision. The practices could hurt public confidence in the IRS, the report said.
