"Glammed-up" Princess Merida ignites backlash; Disney stands firm

A Disney "glammed-up" makeover of "Brave"’s Princess Merida for a The Disney Princess Collection toy line sends a negative message to young girls, according to a petition launched on Change.org. The petition has garnered over 200,000 signatures, and won the support of the character’s creator and the movie's co-director Brenda Chapman. "The redesign of Merida in advance of her official induction to the Disney Princess collection does a tremendous disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empowering role model who speaks to girls' capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired," the petition reads. Disney asserts its redesign is tamer than the depictions circulating on the Internet and still plans to bring the new Merida to market in a limited run.
