Eating too little salt can have ill effects and reducing consumption to levels recommended by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans does not have clear benefits, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine. The report's authors did not endorse a target range, but most Americans are "nowhere near the low end of salt consumption," said the leader of the IOM committee examined the issue.
