Report: Dual-language programs help young ELLs learn English

Preschool and kindergarten students who are English-language learners benefit most from programs that also used their home language, rather than English-only programs, according to a federally funded analysis of 200 studies on dual-language programs. In this blog post, education reporter Lesli A. Maxwell writes that data from the studies also showed that these students acquire overall literacy skills later and differently than students learning in a single language. "It's counterintuitive, but building the literacy and language skills in the first language helps students build their proficiency skills in English," researcher Eugene E. Garcia said.
