Smoothie King shifts gears from strictly franchise model

About 200 of the new stores New Orleans-based Smoothie King plans to open during the next five years will be corporate units, a shift from the franchise model that will let the chain test new products and practices for success before requiring franchisees to make changes, said CEO Wan Kim, who was a 100-unit franchisee in South Korea before taking the helm last year. "[T]he company-owned stores should take that risk. If it fails, it should fail in company stores."
