When Deloitte CEO Joe Echevarria started out his career, he kept getting evaluations that said he had little chance for promotion. Fortunately, a mentor gently pointed out that his appearance -- bad hair, bad mustache, polyester suits -- was holding him back. "Right before I left on vacation, she said to me, 'You're coming back without that mustache. You will never make it into management if you look like the Frito Bandito,' " he recalls.
