Bill with reduced farm and nutrition spending advances

The House Agriculture Committee has approved a $940 billion farm bill that would cut $40 billion in farm and nutrition spending over 10 years and keep a sugar subsidy intact. The bill also would cut $2.5 billion a year from the food stamp program; eliminate about $5 billion in direct payments to farmers of corn, wheat and other crops; and create subsidies for farmers of peanuts, cotton and rice.
