New CTP head: Public health community sees some tobacco products as less risky

The public health community has been forced by market changes to contend with the idea that certain tobacco products are less risky to health than others, new FDA Center for Tobacco Products Director Mitch Zeller told the audience at the Tobacco Merchants Association's annual meeting Thursday. The center plans to address menthol cigarettes and regulate cigars, electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products, Zeller said. The agency is making headway in its efforts to reduce the backlog of more than 3,500 applications for new products, Zeller said.
