Survey, articles in NEJM address roles of NPs

Majorities of nurse practitioners and doctors agreed that NPs should be allowed to practice to the full extent of their training and education, but they didn't agree on some proposed changes to NPs' scope of practice, according to a survey of 467 NPs and 505 physicians published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Data showed that 82% of NPs said they should be able to lead patient-centered medical homes, a view echoed by 17% of doctors. Sixty-four percent of NPs said they should receive similar pay as doctors for the same service, while 4% of doctors agreed. The journal includes an article on nurse practitioners' expanding roles and an editorial by Dr. David Blumenthal and Melinda Abrams calling for cooperation between NPs and doctors.
