Budget would end some STEM programs but increase overall funding

The fiscal 2014 budget proposed by President Barack Obama included plans to eliminate or consolidate 116 of the government's 226 initiatives in science, technology, engineering and math. However, federal officials say many of the programs targeted for elimination are redundant or "copycat" programs, and the new budget calls for $3.1 billion in STEM spending, representing a 6% boost from what Congress approved last year.
