Energy benchmark probe could have far-reaching effects

The European Commission's investigation into possible energy benchmark manipulation could have far-reaching effects as regulators sift through years of data to seek evidence of wrongdoing. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., has sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder requesting that the Justice Department open its own investigation. "Efforts to manipulate the European oil indices, if proven, may have already impacted U.S. consumers and businesses, because of the interrelationships among world oil markets and hedging practices," Wyden wrote.
