20% of pediatric ED visits for abdominal pain are caused by constipation

U.S. researchers looked at 9,424 children and teens who were taken to an emergency department for abdominal pain and found that nearly 20% of them were diagnosed with constipation. Appendicitis was more common among white patients than blacks, but constipation, gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections were more prevalent in black patients. The findings were published in the journal Pediatrics.
