Commentary: Proposal could be cure for housing-finance reform

The Washington-based Bipartisan Policy Center gathered a commission of 21 stakeholders to formulate a proposal for reforming housing finance. The proposal calls for winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and channeling savings from a reduction in the home mortgage interest deduction into affordable rental housing, among other things. The fact that housing-industry leaders came together to address these issues is notable, and Congress and the White House should follow suit, writes columnist Neal Peirce.
