Researchers at the University of North Carolina are creating a map of the foods Americans are buying and eating, which could show how the marketplace is changing, help target nutrition guidelines and influence food manufacturers. The researchers are tapping into databases of food items found in stores and homes and matching the information with nutrition-fact-panel data and government statistics on individual dietary intake.
