The Florida Public Service Commission needs to compare the cost of Duke Energy's proposed Levy County nuclear project with that of a natural gas facility, said state Rep. Dwight Dudley. A newspaper analysis determined that the nuclear plant would be more expensive than a gas facility over 60 years, and Dudley said that merits a thorough review. Richard Myers, vice president of policy development and planning and supplier programs at the Nuclear Energy Institute, said the plant would lessen the state's reliance on natural gas. "Floridians may recall that in 2008 and 2009, the state endured its highest-ever electricity costs when natural gas prices were hitting all-time highs. Five years later, Florida relies even more on natural gas," he writes.
