CTIA: Verizon may sell single-mode 4G phones this year

Verizon Wireless might sell phones equipped with single-mode Long-Term Evolution gear this year but will not abandon its legacy 3G network until at least the end of the decade, a top engineering executive said at CTIA 2013 on Tuesday. Jim Wales said the first line of single-mode devices might not include smartphones. Verizon's LTE footprint covers 95% of the U.S., and once the carrier deploys voice-over LTE it will have less of a need for CDMA technology.
