Gene switching process may aid diabetic wound healing

Using cultured skin cells, researchers at the A*STAR Institute of Molecular Biology have identified a complex genetic mechanism involving production of mRNA and microRNA that appears to facilitate wound healing by alternating between the two. Lead scientist Prabha Sampath and his colleagues then examined patients with chronic nonhealing ulcers, such as diabetic foot ulcers, and found that the RNA switching process appeared to malfunction. Sampath now hopes to develop a therapy that will restore this RNA mechanism and improve wound healing.
