Raise mowing height, use sharper blades to help lawn withstand drought

A higher mowing setting will allow grass blades to grow taller, helping the lawn withstand long periods of dry weather, according to Richard Hentschel, a horticulture educator at the University of Illinois Extension Service. Taller grass provides shade and more nutrients for the roots. Sharpen mower blades to prevent tearing and make sure the lawn gets a half an inch of water about twice a month, Hentschel advises.
