Systems and Materials Research Corp. in Texas is developing a 3D printer that could serve up meals to astronauts. The company will create the synthetic food by mixing powdered proteins, fats, starches and flavors with oil or water. The system could also be useful for the military. "A 3D-printed food system can reduce military logistics, disposal waste, increase operational efficiency and mission effectiveness especially during wartime," the company said in its proposal to NASA.
