A nonprofit recruited 30 at-risk high-school students to help retrofit muscle cars with electric engines, and will let them drive the car on an educational trip to Washington, D.C. The catch? The car is fitted with a computer that doles out battery power based on how much social chatter the youths can generate: 5 watts for a new Twitter follower, and a single watt per Facebook "like." Generating the 71,040 watts needed to drive from Kansas City, Mo., to Washington will help the students develop confidence and a sense of community, organizers say.
