Early treatment prevents lesions from turning malignant

Dermatologists can treat precancerous skin lesions before they turn malignant using liquid nitrogen, a chemotherapy-based cream or photodynamic therapy. Some precancerous lesions resolve on their own if they are not exposed to more ultraviolet rays, Yale dermatology professor David Leffell said. Early treatment can stop about 80% of precancerous lesions, according to Dr. Darrell Rigel, a past president of ASDS.
