FDA: J&J unit's sedation system effective for colonoscopies

FDA reviewers found that Ethicon Endo-Surgery's SEDASYS System was effective in sedating patients undergoing a colonoscopy but not those getting a gastroscopy. The SEDASYS System is a computer-aided device that controls the delivery of propofol, a sedative, eliminating the need for trained anesthesiologists. A panel of medical experts is expected to meet to discuss whether to recommend the device for approval.
