House panel OKs proposal to extend CFATS

The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday advanced a bill that would extend the Department of Homeland Security's Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards. The program, which includes more than 4,000 U.S. facilities, would have to be approved by the department. The measure has shortcomings, said co-sponsor Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, but "we need some surety the [program] will continue to be funded. Overall, the safety of these chemical facilities far outweighs any political debate."
