Fueled by a rising middle class and a young population, Wal-Mart has expanded its grocery offerings throughout Mexico, and the country's biggest supermarket chains have expanded their own modern grocery offerings. Market share for the top five grocery chains in Mexico rose to 38% in 2011 from 26% in 2006, and it continues to rise as more consumers switch from traditional mom-and-pop markets to modern supermarkets, according to Planet Retail analyst Carlos Hernandez.
