Worrisome Ala. illnesses not so mysterious after all

Ten cases of people recently hospitalized in Alabama with similar symptoms do not constitute a new infectious disease outbreak, according to the CDC, because the patients had several unrelated illnesses caused by known pathogens. Two people died. Two were released, and the six others remain hospitalized. Extensive testing ruled out H5N1 and the new SARS-like coronavirus causing problems abroad. Four patients had rhinovirus. Three had bacterial pneumonia, and the others had strains of influenza.
