New York moves closer to charter-school expansion

Lawmakers in New York's state Assembly are poised to vote on a bill today to increase the number of charter schools allowed in the state from 200 to 460 over the next four years. The legislation would also establish councils to mediate disputes over sharing facilities with traditional schools, allow the state to conduct financial audits of charters and prohibit new for-profit charters. If approved, the bill still must advance through the state Senate and be signed by Gov. David Paterson.
