Bell Labs bolsters long-haul fiber capacity with dual-beam technology

Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs has transmitted data at a rate of 400 Gbps across 7,954 miles of fiber using technology similar to that used in noise-canceling headphones. The system, which helps eliminate interference common to long-haul links, involves superimposing two parallel light beams running on opposing phases.
