Mass. city council aims to add benches, against mayor's wish

The Northampton, Mass., City Council plans to propose an ordinance that would install more benches downtown and a resolution for "vibrant sidewalks," conflicting with Mayor David Narkewicz's order to remove six benches to deter homeless people from panhandling. Narkewicz's plan, which is in a trial period, has drawn criticism from councilors and residents.
