Alex Trebek on the importance of geography education

Research shows that many U.S. students lack proficiency in geography, and the subject matter is often rolled into a broader discipline called social studies in American schools. Geography "hasn't gotten the attention it deserves," but it has enormous value in helping students to understand the world, said Alex Trebek, who moderates the National Geographic Bee. "If you know geography -- if you know the background of civilizations, if you know their religions -- you will be much better off in terms of understanding where they're coming from," he said.
