Temporal lobe epilepsy linked to more psychiatric problems in youths

U.S. researchers looked at 40 6- to 17-year-olds with epilepsy who failed to respond to antiseizure drugs and found that patients whose seizures were centered on the temporal lobe had higher odds of depression and had more serious behavioral issues. The findings, published in the journal Epilepsia, suggest that psychiatric evaluations are vital for these patients prior to epilepsy surgery.
