The effects of the Affordable Care Act are rippling through the health care industry, including the nuclear medicine and molecular imaging field, according to a review published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology. However, the application of health care overhaul strategies in the practice of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging is "limited largely by the lack of consensus around what defines quality," researchers said. The ACA's hospital outpatient quality reporting initiative is expected to have a substantial effect on imaging, as is a focus on appropriate use, determined via clinical decision support systems, and specifically appropriate use of amyloid imaging. SNMMI is engaged on all three fronts, the report notes.
