Pregnant women increasingly using midwives for birth

The number of pregnant women who are turning to midwives to help with their childbirth has doubled since 1990, with 8% using midwives in 2003, compared to 4% in 1990. Insurers generally cover midwife care, as long as the midwife is licensed according to state law and works in a hospital or approved birthing center.
