LaHood: Limits in federal railroad regulations could cut costs

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said $225 million to $400 million in installation expenses could be spared if certain limitations are imposed on positive train control systems. This could also save the industry about $1 billion in maintenance work and other expenses over 20 years. "The FRA has examined this rule and decided that revisions could be proposed that would significantly reduce industry burdens without adversely affecting rail safety," said LaHood.
