Doctors are worried about a trend in spas and studios run by nondoctors offering laser tattoo removal. Only six states require that laser-assisted procedures be performed or supervised by a licensed medical doctor, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association says. Laser tattoo removal changes not only the tattoo but also the skin, says dermatologist Mathew Avram, director of the Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. "If you don't know what you're looking at ... you're just blindly treating it," Avram said.
