Columnist: Heartworm is now found in all 50 states

Any dog or cat that's not on a year-round heartworm preventative can be infected with the potentially deadly disease with the simple bite of a mosquito, writes pet columnist Sharon L. Peters. The parasite, which used to be largely limited to the southern U.S., has now been found in all 50 states, making it imperative for pet owners to protect their dogs and cats, she writes.
