California Senate approves bill to ban foam food containers

The California Senate has approved a bill to phase out foam food containers statewide during the next five years. Consumers often only use the containers for a few minutes, but their effect on the environment is significant because they take years to break down in landfills, said the bills supporters. Opponents, including the California Restaurant Association, argue that the bill would come with a high price tag and say foam containers are the best for maintaining food temperatures.
