How starfish beat the heat

Scientists placed 70 ochre starfish under heat lamps to determine how the species avoids overheating in the high temperatures of low tide. Two-thirds of the survivors exhibited higher temperatures in their arms, leading researchers to conclude that starfish export heat from their vital organs to their extremities. Several of the surviving starfish, however, severed their own heat-damaged arms.
