EIA discusses roles of RINs, RVOs in RFS compliance

The Energy Information Administration has published an article discussing Renewable Identification Numbers and Renewable Volume Obligations as part of the Renewable Fuel Standard. RVOs are the obligated parties' goals, calculated by dividing each RFS target by the overall estimated supply of nonrenewable gasoline and diesel in a calendar year, while RINs are used by the Environmental Protection Agency to track compliance and build flexibility into the RFS, the EIA said. For 2013, the EPA's proposed RVO targets are 0.008% for cellulosic biofuels, 1.12% for ethanol equivalent of biomass-based diesel, 1.6% for advanced biofuels and 9.63% overall.
